Gus Atkinson rested for England's ODI series against Australia, Olly Stone drafted in

The England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has made one change ahead of the five-match ODI series against Australia, beginning on September 19 in Nottingham. With Gus Atkinson playing all six Tests of the summer, he has been rested and Olly Stone will take his place in the squad.

Atkinson, the 26-year-old right-arm speedster, made his debut at Lord's against the West Indies and took a fifer to help England to an innings victory. The Surrey bowler also hit a maiden century and claimed his second fifer in Test cricket against Sri Lanka at Lord's. As far as limited-overs cricket is concerned, the youngster made his first appearance last year and has featured in five ODIs and nine T20Is.

Olly Stone marked his comeback in the second Test against Sri Lanka at Lord's, replacing Mark Wood. The 30-year-old took four wickets at Lord's and finished with three at The Oval in what proved to be a losing effort. Stone has also featured in a solitary T20I and eight ODIs, the last of which came in January 2023.

England squad: Jos Buttler (c), Jofra Archer, Olly Stone, Jacob Bethell, Harry Brook, Brydon Carse, Ben Duckett, Josh Hull, Will Jacks, Matthew Potts, Adil Rashid, Phil Salt, Jamie Smith, Reece Topley, and John Turner.

Meanwhile, the Englishmen are doubtful of having Jos Buttler for the ODI series due to the calf injury that rendered him unavailable for the T20I rubber. With Phil Salt set to captain the hosts in the shortest format, he could also lead them in the 50-over games if Buttler gets ruled out.

Australia are coming off a 3-0 series sweep over Scotland, thereby riding high on confidence. Australia will also take confidence from defeating their arch-rivals in the group stage game of T20 World Cup 2024 in Barbados.
