Hardik Pandya fined for slow over rate after PBKS vs MI IPL 2024 match
Mumbai Indians (MI) captain Hardik Pandya has been fined for maintaining a slow over rate in their IPL 2024 clash against the Punjab Kings (PBKS) in Mullanpur on Thursday, April 18. The all-rounder was fined ₹12 lakh for breaching the Code of Conduct of the IPL, forcing him to pay a heavy fine.
The BCCI issued a statement, stating that it was the first instance of Mumbai Indians failing to maintain the over rate this season.
"Hardik Pandya, the Mumbai Indians captain, has been fined after his team maintained a slow over rate during their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 match against Punjab Kings at the PCA New International Cricket Stadium, Mullanpur on April 18. It was MI's first overrate offence this season. "As it was his team’s first offence of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over rate offences, Pandya was fined ₹12 lakhs," the statement read.
Earlier, the likes of Rishabh Pant (Delhi Capitals), Shubman Gill (Gujarat Titans), and Shreyas Iyer (Kolkata Knight Riders) have also faced fines as their respective teams could not maintain the over rate.
Hardik Pandya and company prevail over Punjab Kings' lower-order might
MI got the better of PBKS in Mullanpur by nine runs as efforts from Shashank Singh and Ashutosh Sharma went in vain. After Punjab Kings skipper Sam Curran decided to bowl first, Suryakumar Yadav starred with a 53-ball 78, while Rohit Sharma and Tilak Varma chipped in with critical contributions.
With 192 to defend, Jasprit Bumrah and Gerald Coetzee cut through Punjab's top order. The home side managed to tread their way to triple figures after Shashank's 25-ball 41. Nevertheless, it was Ashutosh's assault that gave PBKS massive hope. He smashed 61 off 28 deliveries and added 57 runs with Harpreet Brar.
However, the Punjab Kings failed to get over the line as Kagiso Rabada's run-out meant that they were bowled out for 183 in the final over. Jasprit Bumrah emerged as the Player of the Match for his outstanding figures of 4-0-21-3.
