Harmanpreet Kaur becomes only 3rd player to complete 3500 runs in WT20Is during IND vs SL 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup clash

India captain Harmanpreet Kaur became the only third player to complete 3,500 runs in Women’s T20Is on Wednesday, October 9. Kaur achieved the milestone during the 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup clash between India and Sri Lanka in Dubai.

Notably, the right-handed batter scored an unbeaten 52 runs off just 27 balls at a stunning strike rate of 192.59, hitting one six and eight boundaries. This was her 13th fifty in WT20Is.

The other two players to have 3,500 runs in the format are New Zealand opener Suzie Bates (4481 runs in 167 matches) and Smriti Mandhana (3562 in 144 games). The top five list also features former Australian captain Meg Lanning (3405) and West Indies all-rounder Sarah Taylor (3386*).

Harmanpreet Kaur and Smriti Mandhana’s 50s help India set a 173-run target vs Sri Lanka in Women’s T20 World Cup clash

Half-centuries from skipper Harmanpreet Kaur and opener Smriti Mandhana helped India post 172/3 against Sri Lanka. Mandhana scored 50 off 38 deliveries, a knock laced with one six and four boundaries. Shafali Verma also chipped in with 43 off 40, comprising four boundaries. Sri Lanka skipper Chamari Athapaththu and Ama Kanchana bagged one wicket apiece.

At the time of writing, the Islanders were at 61/6, with Kanchana and Sugandika Kumari at the crease.

If they manage to hold off Sri Lanka, the Women in Blue will register back-to-back wins in the Women’s T20 World Cup. A big margin victory against Sri Lanka would also boost their net run rate as they aim for a place in the semifinals. They lost their opening game against New Zealand by 58 runs before beating Pakistan by six wickets in their second fixture.

The Harmanpreet Kaur-led side will play their final group-stage game against defending champions Australia in Sharjah on Sunday, October 13.
