Has Rohit Sharma been retained by MI ahead of IPL 2025 Auction?
Rohit Sharma has been retained by Mumbai Indians (MI) ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 auction on Wednesday (October 31). Four other players, Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma are the other retentions by the franchise.
MI took to their official social media accounts to announce their retentions. Their statement read:
“We have always believed that the strength of a family lies in its core and this belief has been reinforced during the course of recent events. We are thrilled that the strong legacy of MI will be carried forward by Jasprit, Surya, Hardik, Rohit and Tilak - players who have become synonymous with our team and the brand of cricket we stand for."
The last edition saw Hardik Pandya take over the captaincy from Rohit Sharma. However, the side finished last in the points table with four wins in 14 league games. Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma amassed 417 runs in 14 innings at a strike rate of 150, with a top score of 105*.
How has Rohit Sharma performed for MI in the IPL?
Rohit Sharma represented the now-defunct Deccan Chargers in the first three Indian Premier League (IPL) seasons. Since 2011, Rohit has been plying his trade for the Mumbai Indians and has become an IPL stalwart.
The first two seasons witnessed him return with a combined 805 runs while scoring his maiden century in 2012.
Mid-way through the 2013 season, Ricky Ponting decided to step down from the captaincy and Rohit took over the leadership responsibility. He struck gold by producing his best-ever season with 538 runs and helped MI to lift their maiden title.
The 2015 edition saw 'Hitman' slam 482 runs and lead the side to their second title victory. The following season, Rohit had another successful campaign with 489 runs.
Although he had a mediocre 2017 season with 333 runs, the side went on to clinch the trophy. Under Rohit's leadership, MI secured back-to-back trophies in 2019 and 2020. So far, the veteran batter has amassed 5,458 runs in 212 games for MI at a strike rate of 131.08, with two centuries and 35 fifties.
