“He himself came and talked with me” - When Ravichandran Ashwin helped Vidarbha spinner get SG contract
All-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin, who announced his retirement from international cricket on Wednesday, December 18, is known for guiding youngsters and fellow teammates on the field.
However, he has also helped young cricketers not just in terms of their game but beyond the pitch as well. One such instance involves Harsh Dubey. The Vidarbha spinner not only benefitted from some valuable insights from Ashwin about the game but also from his support in bagging a contract with sports manufacturing company SG.
The Vidarbha spinner, speaking to The Hitavada, stated that his deal with SG was possible only because of the support he received from Ashwin.
“It was because of him I still have an SG contract. He had helped me in getting one in 2021 when I was playing club cricket in Chennai,” Dubey said.
“I was without any contract. When he came to know, he called one of his acquaintances and helped me get one. Once I was sitting in the dressing room during a match in Chennai when Ashwin sir inquired about me. When he came to know that I was playing for his side, he himself came and talked with me,” he added.
Harsh Dubey opens up on interactions with Ravichandran Ashwin
The Vidarbha spinner also opened up on his brief conversations with Ravichandran Ashwin, stating that the 38-year-old has helped him with his cricket and that he is reaping the benefits of his advice even today.
“He has a wealth of knowledge. He is very passionate about cricket. He very keenly watches even club matches. I had a few brief interactions with him during my Chennai stint. His minute observations and corrections in my bowling as well as batting have helped me a lot. Even today, I am benefiting from those tips,” Dubey said.
Dubey added that he also texted Ashwin after the all-rounder announced his retirement from international cricket.
“Yes, of course. I have texted him as well as his closest friend. Today he would be receiving thousands of messages from his team-mates and friends world over. Mine would have been buried somewhere in his mobile. But I am sure he would reply. I will stay in touch with him and will seek his valuable advice,” he concluded.
