"He didn’t really want to finish" - Former England coach Peter Moores on James Anderson during ENG vs WI 2nd Test
Former coach Peter Moores feels former England pacer James Anderson should have continued playing Test cricket. Anderson called it quits after playing the first Test of the ongoing series against the West Indies at Lord's, picking up 704 wickets from his 188 Tests.
Anderson met with captain Ben Stokes, coach Brendon McCullum, and Director of Cricket Robert Key a few months ago in Manchester and was told about their decision to move on from the 41-year-old. However, Moores claimed that after having a conversation with Anderson he felt that the veteran pacer was not willing to end his career.
Here's what Moores said about James Anderson while on air for BBC:
“I knew when I spoke to Jimmy at Southport he didn’t really want to finish. He looks fit, he looks strong. After watching him that day I thought: ‘No. There’s more miles in the tank.’”
Anderson did tell the reporters ahead of his final Test that he understood the perspective of England's leadership group but also accepted that he felt he had been fit and bowling well.
James Anderson's emotional message post-retirement
James Anderson had taken to Instagram to post pictures from his final Test appearance and opened up on his emotions on witnessing the atmosphere at Lord's. Anderson also thanked the fans for their support and expressed his gratitude for the reception he received.
Here's what he wrote:
"Hard to put into words the emotions that I felt this week. It was pretty overwhelming to see and hear the reaction of people in the ground. A truly unforgettable week. The atmosphere was as good as I’ve experienced at Lords. Thank you for making it so memorable."
England have begun the second Test in Trent Bridge in emphatic fashion. They have already raced to 134/2 in just the first session of play after being asked to bat first.
