"He's the ultimate team man" - Nathan Lyon laments Josh Hazlewood's absence for BGT 2024-25 2nd Test

Record-breaking Australian spinner Nathan Lyon has acknowledged that Josh Hazlewood's absence will be felt when they face Team India in the decisive pink-ball Test in Adelaide, beginning on December 6. Lyon heaped praise on the right-arm seamer, claiming that he always puts the team first.

Hazlewood's side strain has ruled him out of the day-night fixture against India at the Adelaide Oval. The 33-year-old was Australia's best bowler in Perth, taking five wickets across two innings without conceding too many runs. Scott Boland remains in line to replace him.

Speaking to reporters, Lyon revealed that Hazlewood complained to him a few days ago about the side issue. However, the New South Wales spinner observed how well he continues to rally behind the side despite being on the sidelines. As quoted by India Today, he stated:

"It's pretty disappointing. The other day when he told me, about four or five days ago now, that he had a little side issue. But, yeah, the quality of a person that Josh is. He is getting around everyone, making sure that everyone's right here first, but he's also doing his rehab and training ball.
"You've seen him doing his training tonight, and I think he did a 90-minute rehab session yesterday, so he's the ultimate team man. To be honest mate, he puts everyone first, and you will see that this week."

Hazlewood also has an impressive record at the Adelaide Oval, taking 41 wickets in seven matches at 16.83 with three fifers. The New South Wales seamer was the chief wrecker when Australia skittled India out for 36 in 2020 at the same venue.

The 37-year-old went on to express optimism in Mitchell Marsh's bowling ability in Adelaide despite concerns around his fitness. He added, as quoted by Perth Now:

"I’m not concerned about ‘Bison’s’ (Marsh) fitness. He’s been brilliant for us in the games he’s come back in. I’ve got full confidence in the ‘Bise’, and to be honest, I’m happy to bowl his overs. I honestly think we’ll see Mitch Marsh bowl. There you go."

Marsh was also amongst the best batters for Australia in their second innings in Perth, scoring 47 runs.
