How can Australia qualify for semifinals of 2024 T20 World Cup after their 24-run loss to India?

Australia suffered their second consecutive defeat in the 2024 T20 World Cup earlier today (Monday, June 24) in St Lucia. The Aussies went down by 24 runs in a battle against India at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium.

Courtesy of this defeat, Australia have finished with only two points from three matches in the Super 8s round. They remain second in the Group 1 points table, meaning they still have a chance to qualify for the semifinals.

Although Australia's fate is no longer in their hands, here's a look at how the 2021 T20 World Cup champions can qualify for the 2024 T20 World Cup semifinals despite losing against India.

Australia are reliant on Bangladesh to stay alive in the 2024 T20 World Cup

Australia need a favor from Bangladesh to stay alive in the mega event. It is pertinent to note that the Aussies beat Bangladesh earlier in the Super 8s stage, but they now have to hope that Bangladesh beat Afghanistan later tonight in Kingstown. At the same time, Australia will have to hope that Bangladesh do not win big.

The Aussies' net run rate is -0.331 right now, which is better than both Afghanistan (-0.650) and Bangladesh (-2.489). Australia and Afghanistan have two points each right now, while Bangladesh have zero.

If Afghanistan beat Bangladesh, by any margin, they will gain two points and qualify for the semifinals. If the game gets abandoned and Bangladesh have to share points with Afghanistan, the Afghans will qualify with three points.

Also, if Bangladesh beat Afghanistan by more than 61 runs or chase the target within 13 overs, the Tigers will overtake Australia's net run rate.

Thus, for Australia to qualify for the semifinals, they have to hope that Bangladesh beat Afghanistan by less than 60 runs or take more than 13 overs to chase the target.
