How many times have India won the Women's Asia Cup?
The 2024 edition of the Women's Asia Cup will be played in Sri Lanka from July 19 to July 28. Eight teams are taking part in the event and have been divided into two groups of four sides each. India, Pakistan, the United Arab Emirates, and Nepal are in Group A, while Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Malaysia, and Thailand are in Group B.
The tournament will kick off with a Group A match between the United Arab Emirates and Nepal at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium in Dambulla on Friday, July 19. India will take on Pakistan in the second match of the day at the same venue. All the matches of the 2024 Women's Asia Cup will be played in Dambulla.
If we talk about India's performance in the Women's Asia Cup, they have a terrific record in the competition, winning seven of the eight editions that have been played so far.
The first four editions were played in the ODI format, with the Women in Blue emerging victorious in all of them. The last four editions have been played in the T20I format, with India winning three of them.
A brief look at India's dominance in Women's Asia Cup
The inaugural Women's Asia Cup was played in 2004 in Sri Lanka. India and hosts Sri Lanka were the only teams that featured in the tournament, with the Women in Blue winning the five-match series 5-0.
India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka featured in the 2005-06 Women's Asia Cup held in Pakistan. India hosts were unbeaten in the tournament and clinched their second title by beating Sri Lanka by 97 runs in the final in Karachi.
The 2006 Women's Asia Cup was held in India, with the same three teams participating. The hosts were again unbeaten and won the tournament by beating Sri Lanka by eight wickets in the final in Jaipur. The 2008 edition was held in Sri Lanka, with Bangladesh making their debut. India lifted their fourth title with a 177-run hammering of Sri Lanka in the final in Kurunegala.
The Women's Asia Cup was held for the first time in the T20I format in Guangzhou in 2012. A total of eight teams participated in the event, with Thailand, China, Nepal, and Hong Kong joining the other four teams. India beat Pakistan by 18 runs in the final. The Women in Blue also won in 2016 in Thailand, again beating Pakistan by 17 runs in the summit clash in Bangkok.
India failed to win the Women's Asia Cup in 2018 in Malaysia. They were stunned by Bangladesh by three wickets in the final in Kuala Lumpur. India returned to winning ways in 2022 in Bangladesh, hammering Sri Lanka by eight wickets in the final to clinch the title for the seventh time.
