"I am absolutely shocked" - Aakash Chopra on Virat Kohli's run-out in IND vs NZ 2024 3rd Test

Aakash Chopra has expressed shock over Virat Kohli's run-out in India's first innings of the third Test against New Zealand in Mumbai. He termed it a judgment error by the former India captain.

India bundled New Zealand out for 235 in their first innings on Friday, November 1. The hosts ended Day 1 on 86/4 in their first essay, with Kohli's run-out on four being the last wicket to fall.

During a discussion on Colors Cineplex, Chopra was asked about his thoughts on Kohli's dismissal.

"Rohit Sharma had to judge length and he made a mistake in that. He felt it was a fullish delivery and he didn't go back. Virat Kohli felt there was a single there but there wasn't. Ultimately, it was an error of judgment, whether the run was available or not," he responded.
"If your judgment is clouded or there are cobwebs, you see mistakes. Virat Kohli - I am absolutely shocked because this is not a technical flaw. You try to address a technical flaw but this judgment call has pushed India back," the former India opener added.

Chopra acknowledged that the run-out might be forgotten if Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill stitch together a lengthy partnership. However, he insisted that Kohli's dismissal was a setback.

"However, let's be fair, Rishabh Pant is there with Shubman Gill. If both of them play one-and-a-half sessions, you will forget what had happened, but this run-out has hurt because the bowler did not have any role in it, it wasn't a technical flaw. It's probably the lack of confidence that eventually impairs your judgment slightly," he observed.

Gill (31*) and Pant (1*) are the unbeaten batters at the crease. The hosts were comfortably placed at 78/1 at one stage. However, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Mohammed Siraj and Kohli's dismissals have put them in a spot of bother.

"If you haven't scored runs or picked up wickets, there is no greater pressure than that" - Aakash Chopra on Virat Kohli's dismissal

In the same discussion, Aakash Chopra was asked whether Virat Kohli might have been under pressure because of the series situation.

"This is a team game. You definitely talk about where the series is standing, and what would happen in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy or the World Test Championship, but the biggest pressure is of your own form or performance. If you haven't scored runs or picked up wickets, there is no greater pressure than that," he replied.
"You make mistakes only when there is more pressure. We have rarely seen him making a mistake in running between the wickets but we saw that also today," the cricketer-turned-commentator added.

Kohli has aggregated 92 runs at an average of 18.40 in five innings in the ongoing series against New Zealand. He did not have a great run in the previous series against Bangladesh either, scoring 99 runs in four innings at an average of 33.00.
