"I just need to go and practice more I guess" - Yashasvi Jaiswal reflects on his dismissal on Day 1 of the IND vs BAN 2024 1st Test

Yashasvi Jaiswal does not believe he was beaten for pace by Nahid Rana, who dismissed him on Day 1 of the first India-Bangladesh Test at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Thursday, September 19. The southpaw, however, agreed that he needs to practice more to avoid how he got out.

Jaiswal scored 56 off 118 on Day 1 of the Chennai Test, a fighting knock which included nine fours. He was looking good for a big one when he nicked a delivery from Rana to first slip. The opener did not display good foot movement and ended up getting a thick outside edge.

At the press conference following the end of the opening day's play, Jaiswal was asked if he felt he was beaten for pace by Rana. The youngster replied:

"I can't say that. Batsmen are going to get out to some deliveries. I just played it. I don't think there is a lot of time to think. I just need to go and practice more I guess."

Batting first after losing the toss, India were three down for 34 inside 10 overs. Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant (39 off 52) lifted India with a fourth-wicket stand of 62. The former said there was not much discussion between the two out in the middle, except for trying to build a partnership.

"Nothing, we were just talking about how we can use our feet. We were trying to score runs off loose balls, form a partnership and play as long as we can."

Pant perished early in the second session of play, nicking a delivery outside off stump from Hasan Mahmud to the keeper. His knock included six fours.

"I think we are in a good position" - Yashasvi Jaiswal

At one point in the day's play, India had slipped to 144-6. However, all-rounders Ravichandran Ashwin (102*) and Ravindra Jadeja (86*) combined to add 195* for the seventh wicket and put Bangladesh on the back foot.

Reflecting on the day's play, Jaiswal opined:

"Initially, the ball was moving and seaming a bit and the wicket was a bit damp, so we took our time. But if you see, in the last session, we scored quite well. I think we are in a good position at the moment."
"The weather was cloudy at the start, so there was some help for bowlers. Yes, they bowled well, but we also scored runs off loose balls," he concluded.

India went to stumps on Day 1 at 339-6 after 80 overs. Ashwin and Jadeja combined to score 163 runs in the last session.
