"I'll put it in Ashes terms for you" - Wasim Jaffer, Michael Vaughan engage in cheeky banter over India's ODI series loss to Sri Lanka
Former India Test opener Wasim Jaffer and ex-England captain Michael Vaughan engaged in some cheeky banter on social media over India's 2-0 loss to Sri Lanka in the recently concluded ODI series. Vaughan tried to troll Jaffer over the Men in Blue's defeat, but the former India batter came up with a befitting riposte.
Sri Lanka dominated India in the three-match one-day series held in the island nation. After the first game ended in a tie, the hosts clinched the second and third ODIs by comprehensive margins of 32 and 110 runs, respectively, at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
On Sunday, August 11, Jaffer conducted a Q&A session on his official X handle. His 'good friend' Vaughan was among those who posed a query to Jaffer. The former England captain asked:
"Hi Wasim .. What was the recent ODI series result in Sri Lanka ? I have been away and missed it .. Hope all is well."
To this, Jaffer replied in his typically humorous style:
"I'll put it in Ashes terms for you Michael. Ind won as many games in that series as the Tests Eng have won in Aus in last 12 years."
India's 2-0 loss was their first defeat against Sri Lanka in a bilateral ODI series in 27 years. Their previous loss was a 3-0 hammering in Sri Lanka in 1997. As for the Ashes, since the start of 2013, England have lifted the urn twice. On the other hand, Australia have won the trophy three times, while two Ashes series have ended in draws.
India's batters struggled against Sri Lanka's spinners in ODI series
While Team India won the T20I series under Suryakumar Yadav by a thumping 3-0 margin, Rohit Sharma and co. were undone by Sri Lanka's spinners in the one-day series, going down 2-0.
Leg-spinner Jeffrey Vandersay finished as the leading wicket-taker in the ODI series, claiming eight wickets in two matches at an average of 8.38. He ran through India's batting line-up with figures of 6-33 in the second match of the series. Left-arm spinner Dunith Wellalage also impressed, claiming seven wickets in three matches at an average of 15.29, which included a five-fer in the third ODI.
Sri Lankan captain Charith Asalanka was the surprise success story in the one-day series. He bamboozled India with his off-spin, claiming six wickets in three matches at an average of 8.67.
