"I said where is the flick shot and he laughed at me" - Mitchell Starc on Yashasvi Jaiswal's 'You're bowling too slow' sledge in 1st BGT 2024-25 Test
Australia pacer Mitchell Starc has reacted to India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal's 'You're bowling too slow' sledge towards him during the opening Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test in Perth. The incident transpired in the second innings of the fiercely contested Test match, with India surging ahead.
After capturing a 46-run first-innings lead, India marched to 72/0 in their second essay, with Jaiswal and KL Rahul keeping the Aussie bowlers at bay. The former had played an outlandish flick across the line after moving towards the off-stump against Starc for a boundary on the third ball of the 19th over.
Two balls later, Jaiswal got right behind Starc's short-of-length ball and uttered 'You're bowling too slow,' as the bowler walked back to his mark.
Recalling his exchange with Jaiswal, Starc told cricket.com.au:
"I didn't actually hear him say I bowl too slow. I don't say too much to people these days. I may have back in the day but now I just sort of get on with it. Played that flick shot and I think I bowled pretty much the same ball and he defended it. I said where is the flick shot and he laughed at me and we just left it at that."
Jaiswal continued his dominance of the Australian bowlers and finished with a breathtaking 161 off 297 deliveries to help India set the Aussies a daunting target of 534.
The hosts surrendered meekly in their run-chase, as they were bowled out for 238, handing India a massive 295-run win and a 1-0 series lead.
"One of those new crop of fearless young cricketers around the world" - Mitchell Starc on Yashasvi Jaiswal
Mitchell Starc praised Yashasvi Jaiswal as one of the world's most fearless young batters and tipped him to enjoy a long and successful career for India.
The 22-year-old has made a sensational start to his Test career with four centuries in 15 matches (28 innings).
In the same interview, Starc said:
"He'll play a lot of cricket for India and be highly successful. Certainly played really, really well in that second innings. He adapted to conditions through that first Test. We got him cheaply in the first innings and he adpated to that and played a fantastic innings so full credit to him. He is one of those new crop of fearless young cricketers around the world."
Earlier in the year, Yashasvi Jaiswal became the second-fastest Indian batter to reach 1,000 Test runs — 16 innings.
The southpaw will be back in action when the two teams meet in Adelaide for the second Test, starting December 6.
