ICC suffered losses of ₹167 crore by hosting 2024 T20 World Cup matches in USA: Reports

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has suffered losses of around $20 million (₹167 crore) by hosting 2024 T20 World Cup matches in the United States, according to a report in news agency PTI (via NDTV). The report further claimed that the losses incurred during the mega event would be one of the topics of discussion during the ICC Annual Conference starting on Friday, July 19 in Colombo.

The 2024 T20 World Cup, won by Rohit Sharma-led India, was co-hosted by the West Indies and the United States. Matches were held in Dallas, New York, and Lauderhill in Florida as part of the tournament. The marquee India-Pakistan match was played at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York on June 9.

Despite a lot of promotional activities, the majority of the T20 World Cup matches in the US were played in front of sparse crowds.

As per the PTI report, while the topic of losses suffered during the T20 World Cup is not part of the nine-point agenda of the ICC Annual General Meeting (AGM), the issue is likely to be discussed as a 'post-event report'.

The possibility of Jay Shah as ICC chairman also likely to be discussed during the AGM - Reports

There is also said to be plenty of interest in the possibility of BCCI secretary Jay Shah taking over as ICC chairman from Greg Barclay. This topic is also likely to be discussed in detail at the AGM.

"It is not about how but when, as he still has one year left as BCCI secretary before his cooling off period in Indian board starts in 2025 as per constitution. However, if he has to take over in 2025, then Barclay can't complete his third term of two years from December 2024 to December 2026," PTI quoted an ICC source as saying.
"There is a school of thought that what if ICC's chairmanship term changes from three terms of two years each to two terms of three years, so the cumulative term can remain six years," the source added.

To put it in simple words, if Barclay's current term becomes three years, then Shah can also complete six years as BCCI secretary. The latter can then take over as ICC chairman in 2025 for three years, which will coincide with his cooling-off period in BCCI. In 2028, Shah could then also return to BCCI as board president.
