Bangladesh won the toss and invited India to bat first. The hosts started steadily, not losing any wickets in tricky conditions during the first five overs. However, Bangladesh pacer Hasan Mahmud struck on the first ball of the sixth over, removing Indian captain Rohit Sharma for six runs off 19 balls. The 24-year-old claimed his second wicket of the innings by dismissing Shubman Gill for a duck.

Virat Kohli, playing in a Test match after more than eight months, had a disappointing outing, scoring six runs and becoming Mahmud's third wicket.

Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant put together a 62-run partnership for the fourth wicket before Pant was dismissed for 39. Jaiswal contributed a solid 56 runs off 118 balls, including nine boundaries. KL Rahul missed his chance to shine, getting out to Mehidy Hasan Miraz for 16.

Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin stitched together an unbeaten 195-run stand off 227 balls for the seventh wicket as India ended Day 1 at 339/6 after 80 overs. Ashwin (102) and Jadeja (86) remained at the crease for the hosts.
