"Incredibly brave" - Jack Edwards on Sean Abbott amid minute's silence for Phillip Hughes in NSW vs TAS Sheffield Shield 2024 match
New South Wales captain Jack Edwards lauded Sean Abbott for displaying the courage as he stood on the field to pay tribute to Phillip Hughes on Day 4 of the first-class fixture against Tasmania in Sydney. The right-hander opined that he couldn't have imagined the emotions circling around the right-arm pacer that moment.
With Hughes' tragic death after being struck by Abbott's bouncer during a first-class fixture completing 10 years, the two teams observed a minute's silence for the late cricketer. According to the Sydney Morning Herald, the 32-year-old was given a choice to sit out of the game, but he chose to play and received excellent support from his teammates.
Speaking after the day's play, Edwards lauded Abbott for meaning business when he came out to bowl, showcasing his class. The 24-year-old said, as quoted by The Sydney Morning Herald:
"He was incredibly brave today. It was an emotional morning and a nice touch by the SCG. It was important to remember Phil. Once we got the cricket started, it was back to business. He [Abbott] showed his professionalism the way he came out and bowled. I’m sure it was extremely emotional for him.”
The right-arm pacer took two wickets in the first innings across 30 overs and followed it up with four more in the second. However, Tasmania Tigers came out on top in the end, winning by 55 runs.
"It’s a tough day for everyone involved" - Jack Edwards
Edwards acknowledged that it was challenging to be on the field due to the tragedy, but took pride on the life Hughes got to experience. The youngster added:
"There was definitely some emotion around it for us. It’s a tough day for everyone involved. But you know, the beauty is that we get to celebrate a great life lived.”
Hughes is likely to receive tributes during the second Test set to take place between India and Australia in Adelaide.
