"Wrap him in cotton wool and use him sparingly" - Twitterati celebrates 'genius' Jasprit Bumrah's first five-wicket haul at home
Indian vice-captain Jasprit Bumrah delivered a sensational performance on Sunday to pick up his first five-wicket haul in India.
Bowling in the first innings of the second Test against Sri Lanka at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, the right-arm pacer picked up five wickets in just ten overs at the cost of a mere 24 runs.
He reached the milestone in sensational fashion - hurrying wicketkeeper-batter Niroshan Dickwella with a lethal bouncer near the chest. The southpaw tried his best to sway away from the line but the ball was too good to miss his glove.
In a way, the dismissal was a sample size of his spell. Bumrah made the rank-turner, low-bounce pitch look like a superb seaming track, using the angles, hitting the deck hard, and playing with the minds of the opposition batters.
This was his first fifer against Sri Lanka and eighth overall. He now has fifers in every country he's played. To add to that, Dickwella was also Bumrah's 300th international wicket - a landmark he's reached in just 156 games across formats.
The record-breaking spell expectedly sent his admirers and Indian cricket fans into a frenzy as they celebrated a "genius". The following are some of the best of Twitter reactions:
Jasprit Bumrah helps India wrap up Sri Lanka for 109
Jasprit Bumrah's brilliant five-wicket haul helped India wrap up Dimuth Karunaratne's side for just 109 in just 35.5 overs, giving the hosts a lead of 143 runs.
This was the second-lowest total by the Lankans against India. Mohammed Shami and Ravichandran Ashwin picked up two wickets each while Axar Patel contributed one as well.
The pitch isn't conducive to typical defense-first Test cricket. India, starting with openers Rohit Sharma and Mayank Agarwal, will come out with an aggressive mindset to swell the lead as much as they can and get the visitors out again.
