India and Australia PM's 11 to play 50-over game on Sunday after rain washed out Day 1
India and the Australian Prime Minister's 11 decided to play a 50-overs/side match on Sunday (December 1) after the first day of the two-day warm-up game at Canberra's Manuka Oval was washed out without toss due to incessant rain.
The toss is now again slated for 8:40 am IST on Sunday followed by the first ball 30 minutes later. The match will still be played with the pink ball to aid the Indian team's preparation for the day-night second Test against Australia in Adelaide, which begins on December 6.
"Play has been abandoned for Day 1 and will resume tomorrow (Sunday) at 9:10 am IST. Coin toss will be at 8:40 am IST. Teams have agreed to play 50 overs per side," the BCCI said in a statement.
The weather forecast for the Manuka Oval on Sunday isn't much better. The area is under a "minor flood watch" until Sunday evening, and a few showers are expected throughout the day.
India would need as much match practice as possible ahead of Adelaide Test
Rohit Sharma's team would not want the second day to be washed out as well. India require as much match practice as possible ahead of the Adelaide Test because they have not played a pink ball Test since March 2022 when they hosted Sri Lanka at the Chinnaswamy Stadium.
The pink ball offers a lot of help to the bowlers, especially in the fading light, and requires special preparations. The last time India played Australia in a day-night Test - also in Adelaide - they were infamously bowled out for just 36 runs in the second innings, with batters failing to counter the excessive seam and swing movement.
India also need this warm-up game to give some practice to skipper Rohit who returned to the series after missing the first Test due to the birth of his second child.
