Team India beat Sri Lanka by 43 runs in the first T20I on Saturday, July 27, at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium. Surykumar Yadav and Gautam Gambhir started their reins as a captain-coach duo with a win in this contest.
After being asked to bat first, India notched up a daunting total of 213/7 in 20 overs. Suryakumar Yadav (58), Yashasvi Jaiswal (40), Shubman Gill (34), and Rishabh Pant (49) performed well for the visiting team in the batting department. Matheesha Pathirana scalped four wickets for the hosts with the ball but conceded 40 runs in his four-over spell.
In reply, Sri Lanka got off to a good start as their openers, Kusal Mendis (45) and Pathum Nissanka (79), put on an 84-run partnership in 8.4 overs. After the departure of Mendis, Nissanka continued to put pressure on the Indian bowlers and put Sri Lanka in a decent position with 140/1 in 14 overs.
However, things changed drastically for the home team after Pathum Nissanka's dismissal on the first ball of the 15th over. Their batting line-up collapsed like a pack of cards as they got all out for 170 in 19.2 overs.

At the post-match presentation, Sri Lanka skipper Charith Asalanka reflected on the loss, saying:
"We were not upto the mark in the powerplay and came back really strong in the later stages. I thought they will get to 240 but they did well to pull in back. Little disappointed with the way the middle order, including myself. We were in a winning position up to the 16th over. This is a new way we are trying to implement and we will take it ahead in the future."
The two teams will square off in the second T20I of the series on Sunday (July 28) at the same venue.
