India vs England: Who won yesterday’s semifinal match in 2024 T20 World Cup?
India beat England by 68 runs in yesterday's 2024 T20 World Cup semifinal at the Providence Stadium in Guyana to book their place in the final. The Men in Blue will now face South Africa in the summit clash in Barbados on June 29. Fittingly, the two unbeaten sides will meet in the mega final of the ICC event.
Sent into bat after losing the toss, India put up 171-7 on the board as skipper Rohit Sharma top-scored with 57 off 39. Spinners Axar Patel (3-23) and Kuldeep Yadav (3-19) then starred with the ball as England were bowled out for 103 in 16.4 overs.
Chasing a challenging target of 172 on a surface where the ball was constantly keeping low, England got off to a breezy start courtesy of Jos Buttler. However, Axar's introduction in the fourth over changed the game's momentum. Buttler (23 off 15) toe-ended a reverse sweep and lobbed a simple catch to the keeper.
Jasprit Bumrah (2-12) then knocked over Phil Salt (5) with a smart off-cutter. England were three down for 35 inside the powerplay as Axar bowled Jonny Bairstow (0) with one that came in with the angle. The batting side's woes continued as Moeen Ali (8) was shrewdly stumped by Rishabh Pant down leg to give Axar his third wicket.
Kuldeep joined the fun by trapping a clueless Sam Curran (2) leg before. Harry Brook (25 off 19) threatened briefly, but he too was knocked over by Kuldeep, who also caught Chris Jordan (1) in front of the stumps. Liam Livingstone (11) was run out following a horror mix-up with Jofra Archer, while Suryakumar Yadav produced a brilliant one-handed flick to run out Adil Rashid (2).
Fittingly, Bumrah took the last wicket by trapping Archer (21 off 15) lbw with one that hit the England lower-order batter on the back boot. India's win was in complete contrast to the 10-wicket drubbing they suffered in Adelaide two years ago in the 2022 T20 World Cup semifinal.
Rohit, Suryakumar lay foundation for Team India's impressive total
Batting first, India lost Virat Kohli (9) cheaply again as he was bowled by Reece Topley while attempting a big hit. Pant (4) perished soon after, chipping one from Curran to midwicket. Rohit and Suryakumar batted smartly to lift India to 65-2 after eight overs when rain interrupted proceedings.
The duo continued their good work on resumption. The defining 73-run stand was broken when Rohit was bowled by a Rashid googly. Suryakumar fell for 47 off 36, miscuing one to long-on while trying to go after Archer. Hardik Pandya (23 off 13) struck consecutive six off Jordan before perishing off the next ball.
Jordan had two in two when the woefully out-of-form Shivam Dube (0) nicked one to the keeper. Ravindra Jadeja (17* off 9) and Axar (10 off 6), however, played handy cameos to lift India past the 170-run mark.
