IPL 2024 Playoff scenarios: SRH or RR - who will finish second in the points table if the RR vs KKR match is washed out?
The IPL 2024 playoff race has reached its climax with the final league stage game between the Rajasthan Royals (RR) and the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to be played in Guwahati on May 19. While the first and the fourth positions on the table have been settled by KKR and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), respectively, today was all about the battle between the SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) and RR for a top-two finish.
SRH just completed their task by winning their final outing against the Punjab Kings (PBKS) at home by four wickets. The result helped them leapfrog RR to second on the standings with 17 points in 14 games.
However, an RR victory against KKR will help Sanju Samson's unit recapture the second spot heading into the playoffs. Yet, there has been a twist in the tale with a downpour delaying the toss of the RR-KKR clash. It has fans wondering how the points table would end up in the event of a washout.
While KKR and RCB will remain on 1st and 4th, RR and SRH will end on 17 points in case of a washout. Yet, a better net run rate of +0.414 for SRH compared to RR's + 0.273 will mean the Orange Army finishes 2nd with RR at third.
A look at the IPL 2024 playoffs if the KKR-RR clash is washed out
Should rain continue to play spoilsport in Guwahati and wash out the KKR-RR clash, fans will turn their attention to the upcoming IPL 2024 playoffs.
In that event, KKR will take on SRH in the Qualifier 1 at Ahmedabad on Tuesday, May 21. The following day will witness the battle of the Royals with RR taking on RCB at the same venue in the eliminator.
The loser of the KKR-SRH clash will then face off against the winner of the RCB-RR eliminator in Qualifier 2 in Chennai on Friday, May 24. The victors of the Qualifier 1 and 2 will battle it out in the grand finale at the same venue on Sunday, May 26.
Among the four playoff teams, KKR have been the most successful with two titles in 2012 and 2014. Meanwhile, RR and SRH have emerged victorious once each in 2008 and 2016.
RCB will look for their first IPL title after qualifying for the playoffs with six consecutive wins.
