IPL 2025 mega auction: 6 retentions allowed per franchise, teams will have to shell out Rs 75 crore to retain 5 players - Reports

In the upcoming auction for the 18th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), franchises will reportedly have to shell out as much as ₹75 crores for the retention of five players from their most recent squad. The IPL Governing Council has convened in Bengaluru today, September 28, to discuss the various aspects concerning retentions and player releases.

As per ESPNCricinfo, franchises will be allowed up to six retentions. Of them least one needs to be an uncapped Indian player. The remaining five can Indians or overseas. The six players can either be retained directly, by a combination of retention and RTM options, or just RTM options.

The purse has also now been bumped up to ₹120 crores per side from ₹100 crores last year.

Additionally, the fiercely debated Impact Player rule has also been retained for this season. The rule was first introduced back in 2023 with many teams and players having mixed opinions on the rule.

Before the last mega-auction held back in 2022, teams were allowed up to four retentions which cost the franchises a sum of a total of ₹42 crores. Franchises like Mumbai Indians, Kolkata Knight Riders and Chennai Super Kings exercised all the available spots while Royal Challengers Bengaluru retained three players.

The price cap in the previous mega auction for uncapped players was set to ₹4 crores, with Arshdeep Singh and Ravi Bishnoi being the notable retentions.
