The BCCI has set Thursday, October 31, 5 PM IST as the deadline for all 10 franchises to announce their retention list ahead of the mega auction for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season. Each franchise has been given the option to retain six players. Among them, a maximum of five players can be capped (Indian or overseas), while a maximum of two can be uncapped.
Players can be retained by IPL franchises either directly or via the Right to Match (RTM) option at the mega auction. Each franchise has been given a purse of ₹120 crore. The deductions will be done based on their retention strategy. If a team decides to retain five capped players, at least ₹75 crore will be deducted from their purse ahead of the mega auction.
The five capped players can be retained for the following prices - player 1 ₹18 crore, player 2 ₹14 crore, player 3 ₹11 crore, player 4 ₹18 crore and player 5 ₹14 crore. Significantly, the franchises can divide the ₹75-crore capped retention pot as per their wish. So, player 1 could be retained for ₹23 crore and player 5 for a price lower than ₹14 crore.

Returning to the retention rules, an uncapped Indian player can be retained for ₹4 crore. Significantly, the BCCI has brought back the rule that an Indian player who hasn't played international cricket for five years and does not have a central contract can be retained as an uncapped Indian player. As per this rule, the likes of MS Dhoni and Sandeep Sharma can be retained as uncapped players.
