"IPL needs Dhoni for its survival"- Top 10 funny memes as retired players will reportedly be considered as uncapped ahead of IPL 2025 auction
The Board of Control For Cricket in India (BCCI) are pondering over bringing back the old rule of considering retired players as uncapped players in IPL, as per News18. Since the inception of IPL in 2008, players who retired from international cricket for five years or more were considered uncapped. BCCI scrapped the rule in 2021 but is now considering reinstating it.
All the franchise owners participated in a meeting with BCCI last month to give their views and opinions ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. During the discussion, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) officials reportedly brought up the matter of bringing back the uncapped retention rule for retired players. They didn't get much support from other franchise representatives at the meeting on the subject.
However, the BCCI seems to be interested in it, considering it might potentially help MS Dhoni prolong his playing career in IPL.
“There is a bright possibility of the rule coming back. It was discussed at length during the meeting last month and could well be brought back when the player regulations are announced,” News18 quoted a well-placed source as saying.
Cricket fans took note of the development and expressed their views on the matter by sharing memes on social media platforms. Most of them felt that the rule was being made to enable CSK to retain MS Dhoni for the next season. Here are some of the memes on the topic:
"We will decide once we get to know about the rules"- MS Dhoni about his career in IPL for CSK
MS Dhoni recently opened up about his IPL future ahead of the mega auction before next season. He left the door open for a comeback in 2025 by revealing that it all depends on the rules prescribed by the BCCI for the auction. At a private event on the matter, Dhoni said (via Team MS Dhoni #Dhoni):
"The rules and regulations will be made for retentions. There is still a lot of time for all that. We will decide once we get to know about the rules and regulations. The ball is not in our court right now. When the rules get formalized, then we will decide."
He continued:
"We will have to make the decision that is best for the team because, at the end of the day, we all want the team to do well. So based on the rules, regulations, and retentions, we will see what is best for CSK, and we will take the best step forward."
