The prestigious Irani Cup 2024 is set to display a thrilling contest between Ranji Trophy champions Mumbai and the Rest of India (ROI) team from Tuesday, October 1, to Saturday, October 5. The annual domestic fixture, organized by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), is played between the defending Ranji Trophy champions and a team comprising top performers from other state teams.
The upcoming edition, initially scheduled to be held in Mumbai, will now take place at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Stadium in Lucknow due to unfavorable weather conditions in Mumbai.
Mumbai, the most successful team in Ranji Trophy history, earned their place in the Irani Cup by clinching their 42nd title in the 2023-24 season, defeating Vidarbha by 169 runs in the final.
The 2024 fixture will be played across five days. Rest of India (ROI) are the defending champions as they beat Saurashtra by 175 runs in the final.
Batting first, the Rest of India scored 308 runs in the first innings. Their bowlers then stepped up, bowling Saurashtra out for just 214 runs. In their second innings, ROI could manage to score only 160 runs. However, they skittled Saurashtra out for a paltry 79-run total after setting a 255-run target.
They will be keen to defend their title against a strong Mumbai team, who will pose a certain challenge.
