Is Yashasvi Jaiswal playing today's IND vs PAK 2024 T20 World Cup match?
Young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal has been left out of Team India's playing XI for the all-important game against Pakistan, scheduled to be played on Sunday, June 9, at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium. He was also not a part of the playing XI for the Men in Blue's tournament opener against Ireland.
Jaiswal was India's designated opener in T20Is in the last 12 months or so with Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma not featuring in the shortest form since the T20 World Cup 2022. The star duo returned to the shortest format during the Afghanistan series earlier this year. Despite that, Jaiswal retained the opener's slot, while Kohli batted at No. 3.
However, after Kohli's success as an opener for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in IPL 2024, he has been slotted in alongside Rohit Sharma. As a result, Yashasvi Jaiswal has had to warm the bench so far.
The Mumbai cricketer has amassed 502 runs in 16 innings in T20Is for India at a strike rate of over 160, including one century and four fifties.
"I would like Yashasvi Jaiswal to get a place in the playing 11" - Coach Jwala Singh
Yashasvi Jaiswal's childhood coach Jwala Singh expressed his desire to see his ward in the playing XI for the clash against the arch-rivals Pakistan. However, he will have to wait for some time to see Jaiswal don the India colors in the T20 World Cup.
Speaking to ANI ahead of the game, Jwala stated:
"The playing 11 has not been declared yet, but I would like Yashasvi Jaiswal to get a place in the playing 11. Apart from this, people in the country have a hope that this time we will win the World Cup at any cost and do not return empty-handed from there."
India have fielded an unchanged playing XI for the Pakistan clash. The Men in Green, meanwhile, have made a solitary change, with Imad Wasim coming in for Azam Khan.
Babar Azam has won the toss and opted to field first on overcast conditions. The game has been delayed by 50 mins due to inclement weather.
