"It takes a lifetime to build a reputation and a moment to spoil it" - Aakash Chopra on the downslide in Prithvi Shaw's career
Aakash Chopra has noted that a downslide in Prithvi Shaw's career is evident. He added that the swashbuckling batter needs to work hard to change the reputation created about him.
Shaw, who was part of the Delhi Capitals in the last few seasons of the Indian Premier League, didn't find any takers at the IPL 2025 auction. He was dropped from the Mumbai Ranji Trophy squad and has recently been ignored for the Vijay Hazare Trophy as well.
In a video shared on his YouTube channel 'Aakash Chopra', the former India opener pointed out that Shaw needs to put in the hard yards to change the impressions about him even if they are slightly misplaced.
"I can tell you things have changed as he does not have an IPL contract now and his name is not there in the Mumbai team for the Vijay Hazare Trophy. He is not scoring runs wherever he is playing. He did score a few runs in England, but right now his career is on such a slippery slope that sometimes you feel for the boy about what is happening," he said (2:00).
"When it came out in the open that there are questions about his work ethic, that he is missing practice and the indiscipline issues were seen in the IPL, even if it is 25 percent of that, and things are being exaggerated, then also Prithvi will have to work because it takes a lifetime to build a reputation and a moment to spoil it," Chopra added.
Shaw was part of Mumbai's side that won the 2024 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. However, the title-winning team's skipper Shreyas Iyer stated that the dashing opener needs to get his work ethics right and that they can't babysit anyone.
"If the reputation has been spoiled, it will take time to correct it" - Aakash Chopra on Prithvi Shaw
In the same video, Aakash Chopra noted that Prithvi Shaw needs to prove that he is disciplined and dedicated to his game.
"If the reputation has been spoiled, it will take time to correct it. So Prithvi Shaw is going through a bad syndrome. He will have to change this syndrome, work very hard, and convince people that he is dedicated and disciplined, and wants to be here and play," he said.
The cricketer-turned-commentator added that the 25-year-old might need someone to guide him during this low phase.
"Sometimes you need mentoring. You need people who can mentor you properly when you are climbing the stairs of success, when you are earning a lot of money and glory. The wagon has obviously derailed but the thing in Prithvi Shaw's favor is that age is with him and he has an inborn talent. It will have to be nurtured again," Chopra observed.
Chopra concluded by saying that Shaw needs to bounce back. He added that it would be a sad story of a talent going unfulfilled otherwise.
