Jemmimah Rodrigues and Deepti Sharma are among the top Indian names to be picked in the WBBL 2024 draft
Team India women's batter Jemmimah Rodrigues and all-rounder Deepti Sharma were some of the top names in the overseas draft to be picked for the upcoming season of the 2024-25 WBBL. The draft was held in Melbourne on Sunday, September 1.
Teams in the Women's Big Bash League have a domestic draft where the players of Australia are chosen and drafted. The overseas draft was held in Melbourne, and four WBBL sides picked up five Indian players.
This year, teams have hada the option to pre-sign one overseas player before the draft. Smriti Mandhana was the only Team India player to be pre-signed by a WBBL franchise, with Adelaide Strikers getting her signature. The Strikers also picked up the Team India opener featured in Set 3
In the first round of players, Team India and UP Warriorz all-rounder Deepti Sharma was acquired by Melbourne Stars. Jemimah Rodrigues, who has played for Melbourne Renegades in the WBBL, was snapped up by Brisbane Heat.
The Heat and the Stars would make another signing each, with Team India wicketkeeper batter Yastika Bhatia and pacer Shikha Pandey heading to the WBBL. Dayalan Hemalatha was the last Team India player in the draft; she was snapped up by the Perth Scorchers.
Danni Wyatt, Sophie Ecclestone and Deandra Dottin among other big names signed in the WBBL 2024 Draft
Hobart Hurricanes went hard in the draft, picking up the likes of Danni Wyatt, Chloe Tryon and Lizelle Lee, exhausting the retentions of Perth Scorchers and Sydney Sixers.
Sophie Ecclestone went to the Sydney Sixers and Deandra Dottin was snapped up by the Melbourne Renegades.
