Jos Buttler officially ruled out of The Hundred 2024 due to calf injury

England white-ball and Manchester Originals captain Jos Buttler has been ruled out of The Hundred 2024 due to a calf injury. The 33-year-old keeper-batter had also missed most of the previous edition due to a similar type of injury and will now recover for a busy white-ball season ahead for England.

The Lancashire cricketer was supposed to lead the Originals this year and there had been reports of him being unlikely to participate in this edition. The Originals have been struggling in the ongoing season, losing all three matches thus far to the Trent Rockets, Welsh Fire, and the Southern Brave.

The right-hander, who has played in all three previous seasons, has a promising record with 632 runs in 17 matches, averaging 39.50 along with a strike rate of 141.70.

Buttler is set to remain captain of the white-ball side despite two unsuccessful World Cup campaigns in the last eight months. Nevertheless, head coach Matthew Mott has stepped down from his role effective immediately.

Mott oversaw England's successful T20 World Cup 2022 campaign but failed to retain the 50-over World Cup in 2023 and the T20 World Cup in 2024. Marcus Trescothick will step in as the interim white-ball coach as the ECB searches for a full-time candidate.

England's limited-overs side will return to action during the home series against Australia at home in September, consisting of three T20Is and five ODIs. The Englishmen will then head to the West Indies in November for three ODIs and five T20Is.

England will also tour India for five T20Is and three ODIs before the Champions Trophy in Pakistan, likely to begin in February. England were the semi-finalists in the 2017 Champions Trophy, losing to eventual champions Pakistan.
