"Just gotta cry all day, say 'Ambani ka paisa' and move on" - Twitterati react as RCB fails to make it to IPL 2023 playoffs after loss vs GT
Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB)'s wait for the elusive IPL trophy continues as they have been eliminated in the group stage this season. In the final league match of IPL 2023 on Sunday, Gujarat Titans (GT) beat RCB comfortably by six wickets to end the latter's title dreams.
RCB went into the match knowing they had to win to overtake fourth-placed Mumbai Indians (MI) in the points table and qualify for the playoffs. In the crunch game, Bangalore side's iconic player Virat Kohli hit a scintillating ton (101*) and almost single-handedly powered his side to a fighting total of 197/5.
The bowling department has historically been RCB's Achilles' heel, and this match was no different. They failed to back up Virat Kohli's valiant batting efforts in the second innings as GT chased down the total clinically with five balls to spare.
Shubman Gill (104*) hit an astonishing century in just 52 balls, feasting on the Royal Challengers bowlers. Fans took note of RCB's disappointing loss and trolled them on Twitter for underperforming consistently after showing promise.
Here are some of the best reactions:
Obviously very disappointed: RCB captain Faf du Plessis
Speaking after the match's conclusion, Bangalore captain Faf du Plessis expressed his disappointment with not making it playoffs this season. He pointed out that they made a couple of mistakes which proved to be costly against a quality side like GT.
"Obviously very disappointed," Du Plessis said. "When you get to the last game of the campaign, you try to make sure you go through. Shubman Gill - to get a hundred, was amazing."
"We were off in one or two areas and against teams like GT, they capitalize," he added. "It was really wet in the second innings but it was also wet in the first innings. There was not a lot of grip in the second innings. I thought 197 was a good score."
Faf du Plessis also heaped praise on Virat Kohli for his magnificent century, saying:
"Virat played an unbelievable knock to give us a chance. He has been amazing. He has played very good cricket throughout this season. It shows Virat has still got a lot left in the tank in T20 cricket."
Reflecting on their performances this season, Faf du Plessis concluded:
"We need to make sure that we are finishing things towards the back end. Last season, DK was wonderful. This season, it was not to be. There was a lot on his shoulders and ideally, we want someone to take that burden off him."
While Virat Kohli scored a magnificent century, the next highest scorer for RCB against GT was Faf du Plessis at just 28 runs.
