Key players injured as Bangladesh announce squad for WI vs BAN 2024 ODI series
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) on Monday, December 1, announced a 15-player squad for their upcoming ODI series against the West Indies. The two sides will square off in a three-match series, with the first game set to be played on December 8.
Najmul Hossain Shanto and Towrid Hridoy were left out due to their respective injury concerns. While the two players take the time off recovering, Mehedi Hasan Miraz was named the captain for the 50-over series in the absence of the regular skipper Shanto’s absence.
While Shanto continues to recover from his groin injury, the BCB’s medical team released a statement providing an update on Hridoy.
"Hridoy had complained of pain in his right groin region and subsequent investigations have confirmed the presence of a medical condition. He has been advised rest and we will reassess him in two weeks to determine his readiness to play," said BCB Sports Physician Monzur Hossain Chowdhury, as quoted by The Daily Star.
Other key players like Mushfiqur Rahim and Mustafizur Rahman will also miss out on the series. While the former is recovering from an injury, the latter is on leave from national duty due to family reasons.
While Miraz continues to lead the Bangladeshi side, this will be his first time leading the side in a 50-over full series. He is currently leading the team in the ongoing Test series in West Indies.
While Afif Hossain has received a call back to the 50-over side after a year, Zakir Hasan’s was a miss after his poor campaign against Afghanistan recently.
The second and third ODIs of the series will be played on December 10 and December 12, respectively. All three matches will be played at the same venue in Basseterre.
