KL Rahul or Sarfaraz Khan - who should be dropped if Shubman Gill is fit for 2nd IND vs NZ Test 2024?
Three names - KL Rahul, Sarfaraz Khan and Shubman Gill are the centre of discussion as India prepare for the second Test against New Zealand, set to begin on October 24 in Pune.
A critical decision looms over the playing XI. Shubman Gill, who missed the first Test due to a neck injury, is now fully fit and ready to return to the side. Gill's absence became one of the major talking points after India's eight-wicket loss in Bengaluru.
The question now revolves around who will make way for Gill in the lineup - KL Rahul or Sarfaraz Khan? Both players find themselves in a precarious position, with one expected to be dropped to accommodate Gill. Rahul, who has had a roller-coaster Test career marked by inconsistency, is under immense pressure after a poor showing in the opening game. On the other hand, Sarfaraz delivered a crucial hundred, that makes his exclusion equally debatable.
With India needing a win to level the series and also keep their chances of making the World Test Championship final strong, the selection dilemma becomes all the more intriguing.
Let us analyze who between Rahul and Sarfaraz should be dropped:
KL Rahul's experience vs recent form
KL Rahul, once considered a permanent member of the Indian Test team, now finds himself in a difficult spot more often than not. His inconsistency has been a major issue despite being an immensely gifted player. He has struggled to cement his place. An average of 33.87 from 53 Tests is modest for a player of his caliber.
Rahul's recent form further complicates his case. He scored just 0 and 12 in the first Test against New Zealand in Bengaluru. This poor performance has raised eyebrows and there is speculation that his place in the playing XI is now in jeopardy.
Despite all of this, there are also arguments for his inclusion. Seven of his eight Test centuries have come in overseas conditions, which suggests that his experience is always vital, especially with the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) coming up. Given the importance of maintaining experience in the line-up, India should back KL Rahul for his potential.
Sarfaraz Khan's breakthrough performance
Sarfaraz Khan, meanwhile, made another statement with his display in Bengaluru. After replacing Gill in the first Test, Sarfaraz failed in the first innings but bounced back with a remarkable ton in the second, scoring 150 runs under immense pressure.
His knock helped India fight back after being bowled out for a shameful 46 in the first innings. His knock, coming under difficult circumstances, makes it almost impossible for the selectors to consider dropping him.
It can be argued that Sarfaraz is relatively new to Test cricket, but he has proven his worth not just with this knock but also with his consistent performances in domestic cricket in the recent past. That said, it could be harsh to exclude him. His potential for long-term success and ability to perform under pressure could make him a valuable asset going forward.
Who should be dropped then?
The decision ultimately boils down to what the team management values more - KL Rahul's experience or Sarfaraz Khan's recent form. If India are looking ahead to their series in Australia, it might make sense to give Rahul more game time, as he will need confidence and form for those tough conditions. Additionally, Rahul has always been a team player, often altering his position and role as needed.
On the flip side, though, it would seem unjust to drop Sarfaraz after a brilliant knock given the circumstances. His ability to rise to the occasion when India needed it the most is a quality that could be hard to overlook. Moreover, dropping a player after such a stellar performance could send the wrong message, especially when the team has built a culture of nurturing emerging talents.
In the lead-up to the second Test, the Indian team management faces a tough call. KL Rahul's experience certainly makes him valuable but Sarfaraz's recent performances may be hard to ignore. With Gill returning, it seems more likely that Rahul, given his recent form, might have to be the one to make way.
However, the team could opt to back Rahul, keeping the BGT in mind. Regardless of the decision, India will need to put their best foot forward to bounce back from the opening defeat.
