“Kohli ke baad next ayega Bumrah” – Ravi Shastri’s ultimate praise for Jasprit Bumrah after fifer in 1st IND vs AUS BGT 2024-25 Test
Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has lauded stand-in captain Jasprit Bumrah for his fiery bowling display against Australia in the ongoing first Test in Perth. The on-air reaction came while Shastri was in the commentators' box, as the pacer bagged his second fifer in Australia.
Shastri said Bumrah is the next big thing in Indian cricket after Virat Kohli, especially in Australia. The former cricketer credited Bumrah for his character in the contest.
Jasprit Bumrah led by example and helped India wrap up Australia for 104 in the first innings. He would’ve bagged the sixth wicket had Rishabh Pant not dropped Josh Hazlewood.
The 62-year-old told said on Star Sports:
“Chad ke khele hain Australia ke saamne. Unke aankh mein dekh kar perform kar saken to aapko respect milega. Aur dekhna abhi Kohli ke baad next ayega Bumrah, jidhar bhi jao Bumrah. Wo ayega kyunki world class fast bowler hai."
"Ek cheez Australian crowds ya media ko manna chahiye ki agar koi tagda cricket khela uske saamne to wo respect dete hain aur badhiya respect. To aaj ke front page pe aaj dekha jaye to aaj Bumrah hai. Lekin aisa spell jaesa Bumrah ne kal daala to ayega hi front page pe, you will earn the respect," he added.
Translated version [English]:
“Bumrah has played on the front foot against Australia. If you can look them in the eyes and perform in front of them then you will earn respect. And just wait and watch, after Kohli, Bumrah will be the next, wherever you go. He will because he is a world-class fast bowler."
"One thing [about] the Australian crowd or media [is that we] should accept that if any big cricket is played in front of them then they give a lot of respect. So, if you look at today's front page [of newspapers], it is Bumrah today. But if you bowl a spell like the one by Bumrah yesterday [on Day 1] then you will definitely come on the front page, you will earn the respect,” he added.
Jasprit Bumrah is leading India as regular skipper Rohit Sharma is on paternity leave.
