Afghanistan registered a thumping 84-run win against New Zealand in the 14th match of the 2024 T20 World Cup at the Providence Stadium in Guyana. With their second straight win, the Asian side have strengthened their chances of advancing to the Super 8 stage, while things got complicated for New Zealand and the West Indies, who are in the same group.

Kiwi skipper Kane Williamson won the toss and opted to bowl first in the contest. Afghanistan openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz (80) and Ibrahim Zadran (44) started well and helped their side to a respectable total of 159 in 20 overs. Matt Henry and Trent Boult picked up two wickets apiece for New Zealand.

Fazalhaq Farooqi (4/17) and Rashid Khan (4/17) then bowled sensational spells in the second innings to dismiss New Zealand cheaply for 75 in 15.2 overs. The Kiwi batters struggled against the duo and fell without putting up much of a fight. Glenn Phillips (18) and Matt Henry (12) were the only batters to register double digits for their side.

"It's one of the greatest performances from us" - Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan after clinical victory vs New Zealand in 2024 T20 World Cup

At the post-match presentation, Afghan skipper Rashid Khan expressed satisfaction with his team's performance and termed it one of their best. Reflecting on the memorable win, he said:

"It's one of the greatest performances from us, specially in this format against such a tough team! I think New Zealand started to stifle us around the ninth over and we realized that quickly, turned things around and got a move on. We played out natural game and the positive intent helped us get over 100 runs in the final 10 overs. I thought anything over 150 would give our bowling attack a lot of breathing space."

Rashid continued:

"The kind of bowling we have, we can give any line-up a run for their money and that's what happened tonight in the World Cup. The running between the wickets from Ibrahim Zadran and Rahmanullah Gurbaz and then the effort in the field by us is just how we want to energize ourselves. The effort matters, more than anything else!"
