Mark Wood sends down the fastest over by an England bowler on home soil in 2nd Test vs WI
England speedster Mark Wood bowled the fastest over by an Englishman on home soil in the ongoing second Test against the West Indies at Trent Bridge. The paceman clocked well over 90 mph for the entirety of his first over in West Indies' first innings, with the fastest being 96.5 mph.
Ben Stokes introduced Wood in the 10th over of the innings, with new-ball bowlers Gus Atkinson and Chris Woakes proving unsuccessful in dismissing the opposition openers. The first two deliveries were clocked at 93.1 mph and 96.1 mph, respectively, followed by 95.2 mph, 92.2 mph, 96.5 mph and 95.2 mph.
He has, however, failed to pick up a wicket so far at the time of writing. The 34-year-old pacer had replaced now-retired James Anderson in the playing XI for the second Test in Nottingham.
Wood last played a Test in Dharamsala, the final fixture of the five-match series against India, but went wicketless in the only innings he bowled. His raw pace played a crucial role in the Ashes series last year, as he took 14 wickets in three Tests at 20.21.
England amass 416 after being sent into bat by the West Indies
Meanwhile, the home side scored 416 runs in their first innings, all of which were scored on Day 1, after West Indies skipper Kraigg Brathwaite won the toss and elected to field first.
Despite getting Zak Crawley for a duck, the visitors couldn't retain control of the game. Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope struck boundaries at will, helping the team cross the 50-run mark well inside five overs. While Duckett perished for 71 off 59 deliveries, West Indies gave Pope two reprieves on 46 and 54.
The Surrey batter went on to strike his sixth Test hundred before departing for 121. Ben Stokes, Harry Brook, Jamie Smith, and Chris Woakes also added valuable runs to lift England to 416. West Indies were 83/2 after 24 overs in their first innings at the time of writing.
The Englishmen lead the three-match series 1-0.
