"Maza aayaa"- Top 10 funny memes after India's dominating 82-run win vs Sri Lanka in ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2024 and remain alive in semis race
India beat Sri Lanka comfortably by 82 runs in the 12th match of the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2024. The Dubai International Cricket Stadium in Dubai hosted the clash on Wednesday, October 9.
After beginning the tournament with a disappointing 58-run loss against New Zealand, the Women in Blue have made a strong comeback. They now have two victories to remain alive in the semi-final race.
India captain Harmanpreet Kaur won the toss and opted to bat first in the contest. Openers Smriti Mandhana (50) and Shafali Verma (43) began watchfully but picked up pace gradually to put on a 98-run partnership in 12.4 overs. Harmanpreet Kaur utilized the platform provided by the openers. She played a blistering knock of 52* (27) to power her side to a daunting total of 172/3 on a tricky surface.
Renuka Singh and Shreyank Patil then bowled brilliantly with the new ball and reduced Sri Lanka to 6/3 in 2.2 overs to put their side ahead early in the second innings. The Lankans couldn't recover from the top-order collapse. Meanwhile, the Indians bowled magnificently and kept picking wickets at regular intervals to derail the chase.
Kavisha Dilhari (21), Anushka Sanjeewani (20), and Ama Kanchana (19) tried to rescue their side. However, they could only delay the inevitable as Sri Lanka eventually skittled out for 90 in 19.5 overs.
The World Cup contest between the two Asian nations engaged the fans with intriguing action. They reacted to it by sharing hilarious memes on X and Instagram. Here are some of the best memes:
"We will have to go back to the whiteboard and rethink"- Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu after loss vs India in ICC Womens T20 World Cup 2024
At the post-match presentation, Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu reflected on the dismal loss, saying:
"We struggled even in the bowling, we dropped a few catches. The bowlers did not bowl the right line and lengths, the batters specially the top-3 including myself did not do well. We will have to go back to the white board and rethink."
She continued:
"Yeah unfortunately, the first loss hurt us, we should have chased that, it was a low-scoring match. It was important to pick ourselves up but we did not manage to do so. We will go back and rethink, put up a good performance in our last game against New Zeland."
Sri Lanka will next square off against New Zealand on October 12, while India will lock horns with Australia on October 13. Sharjah will host both the games.
