“Mum was in tears; was trying not to cry” - Sam Konstas opens up on emotional reactions after getting Test call-up for BGT 2024-25
Australian player Sam Konstas, 19, is in line to make his Test debut against Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. Konstas has disclosed his family's reaction to him earning a place in the Australian Test squad.
The youngster is currently playing for the Sydney Thunder in the Big Bash League 2024-25. Speaking on the sidelines of the match against the Sydney Sixers, Konstas said that his mother was in tears when she came to know that her son was selected to play for Australia.
Further, he mentioned that he was in the training nets when selector George Bailey informed him about his maiden Test call-up. Here's what Konstas said via India Today:
“I was actually in the nets and I got the call by George Bailey and he told me that I was in the test squad, so I was so thrilled, called my parents straight away, they were very emotional. But yeah, hopefully we meet the team on tomorrow and then go from there. Mum was in tears, so I was trying not to cry and then dad was super proud."
Sam Konstas has played 11 first-class matches, aggregating 718 runs at an average of 42.23. He is likely to replace Nathan McSweeney in Australia's playing XI for the fourth Test against Australia, starting on December 26 in Melbourne.

During the same chat with the commentators in the BBL game, Konstas said that his family members made many sacrifices in his life so that he could become a successful cricketer. The 19-year-old added:
"It's been an amazing journey, all the ups and downs, so very grateful for their (family's) sacrifices."
Sam Konstas has two centuries and three half-centuries to his name in his brief first-class career. It will be interesting to see how he performs for the Australian team.
