Mumbai Indians appoint 2-time World Cup winner with England as fielding coach for IPL 2025

Mumbai Indians (MI), the five-time Indian Premier League (IPL) champions, are gearing up for the upcoming season as they aim to lift the title for a record sixth time. Ahead of the 2025 season, the Mumbai Indians have made a new addition to their support staff by appointing Carl Hopkinson as their new fielding coach. For those unaware, Hopkinson hails from England and was their former fielding coach.

The 43-year-old brings immense experience with him. He was the fielding coach of the England team for seven years. During his stint, he played an essential role as England won the 2019 ODI World Cup and the 2022 T20 World Cup.

Additionally, Hopkinson was England's head fielding coach during the 2022 Under-19 World Cup. They had a successful run and finished as runners-up. It was England's first final appearance of the Under-19 event since 1998.

Carl Hopkinson is also a former cricketer, having played domestic cricket for Sussex. With his appointment, MI's previous fielding coach James Pamment, who held the role for seven long years, departs from the franchise. Mumbai Indians thanked Pamment for his services as he was a part of their title triumphs in 2019 and 2020.

Mumbai Indians keen to put behind disastrous 2024 season

Mumbai Indians, among the most successful franchises in the history of the Indian Premier League, did not have a memorable 2024 season as they failed to make the playoffs. Moreover, they finished at the bottom of the table, winning just four of their 14 matches and finishing with eight points.

Off-the-field issues also bugged them as they made Hardik Pandya their new skipper, replacing the hugely successful Rohit Sharma.

Having built a good-looking team at the IPL 2025 auction, the five-time champions will be rearing to bounce back from their disastrous 2024 season.
