Mushfiqur Rahim becomes first Bangladesh player to reach 6,000 runs in Tests during BAN vs SA series opener
Bangladesh wicketkeeper-batter Mushfiqur Rahim has become the first player from his country to reach 6,000 runs in Test cricket. The right-handed batter achieved the landmark during Day 2 of the first Test against South Africa in Dhaka (Tuesday, October 22).
Rahim achieved the feat in his 172nd innings (93rd Test). He reached the milestone when he scored a boundary off Dane Piedt in the 26th over of Bangladesh’s second innings.
Tamim Iqbal is the second-highest runscorer for Bangladesh with 5134 runs in 70 Tests (134 innings). Shakib Al Hasan and Mominul Haque have scored 4609 and 4269, respectively.
Mushfiqur Rahim made his Test debut against England in 2005 and ever since has been a strong force behind Bangladesh’s rise in the format. His best performances have come against Sri Lanka, with 1346 runs in 17 Tests (30 innings), including three tons, against them. He has also amassed over 500 runs against India, New Zealand, Pakistan, West Indies, and Zimbabwe.
The 37-year-old has also scored three double centuries in Tests, two against Zimbabwe and one against Sri Lanka. He recently missed out on his fourth double ton (191) against Pakistan earlier this year.
Apart from Tests, Rahim also enjoys a stellar record in ODIs, with 7792 runs in 271 games, including nine tons and 49 half-centuries. In T20Is, he has 1500 runs in 102 matches.
Overall, he has the most runs for Bangladesh across formats, with 15295 runs, including 20 tons and 82 half-centuries. The top four leading runscorers are Tamim Iqbal (15192), Shakib Al Hasan (14,730) and Mahmudullah (10,744).

At stumps on Day 2, Bangladesh were 101/3 in their second innings, with Rahim (31 off 26) and Joy (38 off 80) at the crease. The hosts are trailing by 101 runs. Kagiso Rabada has emerged as the leading wicket-taker for the Proteas so far, with two scalps in the second innings and three in the first.
