"My father passed away when I was in second grade" - Jasprit Bumrah opens up on how his family dealt with the tragedy

Senior India pacer Jasprit Bumrah's father passed away when he was in second grade and his sister Juhika in fourth grade. He stated that life suddenly changed for them after his father's untimely demise, but added that the tragedy brought the family closer.

After enduring tough times, Bumrah's fortunes changed when he made his debut for Mumbai Indians (MI) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) in the 2013 season. The rest, as they say, is history. Recently, the right-arm pacer won the Player of the Tournament as India lifted the T20 World Cup title for the second time.

Speaking to The Indian Express on their special show, Bumrah recalled how the sudden death of his father changed the lives of the family members and also how the tragic event brought them closer.

"As I told you, my father passed away when I was in second grade and my sister in fourth grade. Then we became really close as a family because life suddenly changed. We had some financial issues as well. So my mother started working, the pace bowler was quoted as saying by The Times of India.
"We became very close as a family because we went through a lot of ups and downs. But since then, that bond has become stronger and stronger. And that has only grown over the years," the 30-year-old went on to add.

Bumrah's sister Juhika now works in the makeup industry. The cricketer admitted that his sister does his makeup during his shoots and added that the family is content with how life has treated them.

"Obviously, she (Bumrah's sister) is now in the makeup industry. She now does my makeup when we do shoots. But we, as a family, are very close as we discuss good days and bad days. We don't want to change ourselves too much because we have seen ups and downs both," the star bowler stated.

Following his heroics in the 2024 T20 World Cup, Bumrah has been rested for the white-ball tour of Sri Lanka. India will play three T20Is and three ODIs in the island nation from July 27 to August 7.

Bumrah was outstanding in the 2024 T20 World Cup

While Bumrah did not finish as the leading wicket-taker in the 2024 T20 World Cup, he was undoubtedly the most impactful bowler on show. In eight matches, he claimed 15 wickets at an average of 8.27 and a stunning economy rate of 4.18.

The right-arm pacer claimed 3-14 against Pakistan in the group stage, 2-12 in the semifinal against England and 2-18 in the final against South Africa.
