"Not too sure whether I'll be going" - Rohit Sharma about his availability for 1st Test of BGT 2024-25

Rohit Sharma confirmed on Sunday, November 3, that he might miss the first Test of the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia in Perth, which starts on November 22. Earlier, reports had emerged that he had put in an application for leave for that Test citing personal reasons.

Rohit's comments came after India's 3-0 home whitewash against New Zealand. Jasprit Bumrah, who was rested in the final Test due to a viral illness, was the designated vice-captain for the rubber and would likely take the armband at Perth before Rohit's expected return for the second Test on December 6.

"Right now, I am not too sure whether I'll be going, but let's see. Fingers crossed," Rohit told the press in Mumbai (via Times of India).

Rohit, who copped a lot of criticism for India's only second home Test series whitewash, accepted responsibility for the defeat, saying his captaincy and batting weren't up to the required standard.

A PTI report (via TOI) on Sunday evening claimed that Rohit, Virat Kohli and the other seniors' place in the squad would be up for BCCI discussion after the defeat.

When asked about his thoughts on India's Test future under him if the Australia series doesn't go well, Rohit said he didn't want want to look "that far ahead" and instead focus on the task ahead.

"Look, I don't think we can look that far ahead. It's important to focus on the next series, which is Australia," the skipper said.

"I'm not going to look beyond Australia series. Australia series, for us is now very, very important. We will try and focus on that rather than thinking what happens after," he added.

India will go to Australia aiming to win a third consecutive Test away series down under but with a team much, much lower on confidence than the last two.
