Team India began their Test season with a comprehensive 280-run victory against Bangladesh at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Sunday (September 22). As a result, the hosts took a 1-0 lead in the two-match Test series and also extended their incredible dominance at home in red-ball cricket.
Bangladesh began Day 4 at an overnight score of 158/4, with senior batters Najmul Hossain Shanto and Shakib Al Hasan at the crease. The duo managed to weather the testing spells of Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, going into the first drinks break of the day without losing a wicket.
Ravichandran Ashwin's introduction immediately after the resumption gave India a much-needed opening as the ace spinner dismissed Shakib Al Hasan. After that, things went south quickly for Bangladesh, as they collapsed from 194/4 to 234 all out in a few overs to lose the match by a huge margin.
Najmul Hossain Shanto fought a lone battle with a fine knock of 82 (127) but did not receive much support from the other batters. After a century on Day 1, Ashwin picked up six wickets in the final innings to round off a brilliant all-round show at his home ground.

"It was a great result looking at what lies ahead for us"- India captain Rohit Sharma after clinical Test win vs Bangladesh in Chennai
At the post-match presentation, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma reflected on the comfortable win, saying (via Hindustan Times):
"I thought it was a great result looking at what lies ahead for us. Yes we've been playing after a long time but you're never out of cricket, you are in touch with cricket. We had a good leadup to the Test match and we got the result we wanted."
On the pitch in Chennai, Rohit said:
"The red soil pitch always has something to offer throughout the game. You need a little bit of patience as well because you don't see much happening straightaway and we've gotten used to it in India where we need something to happen every ball. This was a pitch where we had to show a lot of patience with bat and ball. We were patient enough to get those runs and with the ball too we were patient enough to put the ball in the right areas and take wickets."
The second Test between the two sides will commence on September 27 at Green Park in Kanpur.
