Pakistan players still waiting for last four months salary ahead of 2024 Women's T20 World Cup: Reports
As per a report by Cricbuzz, the players of the Pakistan women's cricket team have been awaiting their salaries for the last four months. The news comes as the Women in Green are set to begin their 2024 Women's T20 World Cup campaign on Thursday (October 3) in Sharjah.
Notably, 20 players were offered a 23-month contract by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), which runs from August 1, 2023, to June 30, 2025.
After a 12-month period, the contracts were to be assessed. However, the players' salaries are still due and there has been no update from the board. As a result, the players have not received compensation since June 2024.
The PCB official said to Cricbuzz:
"It is a work in progress. As soon as the lists are finalized and approved, contracts will be offered with effect from 1 July 2024."
As per the official, the board has had a lack of time to address the contract situation, which is the prime reason for the delay. Moreover, the men's team has also not received their salary for the last four months.
Pakistan lost their both warm-up matches in 2024 Women's T20 World Cup
The Fatima Sana-led side haven't had a good start to the 2024 Women's T20 World Cup. They lost their warm-up matches against lower-ranked teams, which would dampen the team's confidence.
In the first game, Pakistan could post a total of 132 against Scotland, as the opposition sealed the chase in 18 overs. Bangladesh then bundled them out for 117 and won by 23 runs. Omaima Sohail was the side's finest batter with 63 runs while Sadia Iqbal took two wickets.
The Women in Green haven't been able to qualify for the knockout stage in eight editions of the showpiece event. It will be interesting to see if they can improve their performance in the 2024 edition.
