Star Indian cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin has become the co-owner of a new franchise in the Global Chess League. The second season will be played between six teams at the London Friends House from October 3 to 12 as announced on Monday, July 8.
The American Gambits will be the new team co-owned by Ashwin and renowned business names, Prachura PP and Venkat K Narayana, replacing the Chigari Gulf Titans in the competition.
Ashwin, in a media release by the PTI, said:
“We’re thrilled to introduce the American Gambits to the chess world. With a blend of strategic brilliance and unwavering determination, our team aims to redefine the game. As the co-owner, I’m excited to witness their journey and contribute to their success."
The CEO of the Global Chess League, Sameer Pathak, said:
“Prachura’s deep affection for chess and business acumen, Ashwin’s credentials both as an ace sportsman and chess lover, and Venkat K Narayana’s leadership in business and the film industry are well known. The trio’s franchise ownership is expected to bring fresh perspectives and dynamic growth to the league. We are delighted to have them on board for our fast growing and innovative Global Chess League."
Ravichandran Ashwin currently captains the Dindigul Dragons in the 2024 Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL). The side got off to a winning start in their opener against the Trichy Grand Cholas by 16 runs.
How the Global Chess League works
The Global Chess League will feature five other teams apart from the American Gambits, including defending champions Triveni Continental Kings.
The second season will have each team with six players, including two leading female chess stars and a prodigy. A double round-robin format will see the teams engage in 10 matches, two against the other competing sides while alternating between white and black pieces.
The tournament will be broadcast on popular OTT and television platforms around the globe.
"We are thrilled to welcome the teams for the second season of the Global Chess League. We have found the right partners to strengthen the league's global reach and look forward to bringing an exciting season of chess to fans worldwide," said CEO Sameer Pathak.
The champion will be crowned when the two teams with the most accumulated points after the round-robin stage face off in the final round.
As for Ashwin, he will likely take the field for India again when they take on Bangladesh in the two-Test series at home, starting September 19.
