Recap: The last time an international cricket match was held in Gwalior, Sachin Tendulkar created history
International cricket will return to Gwalior after a gap of 14 years when India face Bangladesh in the first T20I on Sunday, October 6. The match will be played at the Shrimant Madhavrao Scindia Cricket Stadium.
The last international game played at Gwalior was an ODI held between India and South Africa at the Captain Roop Singh Stadium on February 24, 2010. It was a historic occasion as the batting legend scored an unbeaten 200 off 147 balls, becoming the first batter in Men's ODI history to notch up a double hundred.
The hosts won the toss and batted first in the second one-dayer of the three-match series. The Men in Blue lost Virender Sehwag for nine, but Tendulkar and Dinesh Karthik (79) added 194 runs for the second. The Master Blaster was also involved in an unbroken 101-run stand for the fourth wicket with skipper MS Dhoni (68*).
India posted a mammoth 401-3 on the board in the 50 overs as Tendulkar slammed 25 fours and three sixes in his 226-minute stay at the crease. The right-handed batter eased to his 100 off 90 balls, but not many would have predicted what was in store. He kept pounding the boundaries and brought up his 150 in the 38th over by chipping Wayne Parnell over midwicket for four.
Tendulkar brought up India's 300 on the last ball of the 41st over, heaving Charl Langeveldt for a six behind deep midwicket. He broke the world record for the highest individual ODI score (194) in the 46th over by flicking Parnell for a couple. The batting legend created history on the third ball of the last over, steering Langeveldt behind point to bring up the first double ton in Men's ODIs.
List of double hundreds scored in Men's ODI cricket after Tendulkar's feat
After Tendulkar, nine other cricketers have notched up double hundreds in men's one-day internationals. Current Indian one-day captain Rohit Sharma is the only batter to do so on three occasions. His 264 against Sri Lanka in Kolkata in 2014 is the record for the highest individual score in men's ODIs. Rohit also hit 209 against Australia in Bengaluru in 2013 and 208* against Sri Lanka in Mohali in 2017.
Three other Indians - Sehwag, Shubman Gill, and Ishan Kishan - have notched up double hundreds in ODIs. Martin Guptill, Chris Gayle, Fakhar Zaman, Pathum Nissanka, and Glenn Maxwell are the other batters with double tons in the ODI format.
