Record Alert: Yashasvi Jaiswal becomes youngest Indian player to score 1,000 runs in a calendar year in Tests during 2024 IND vs NZ 2nd Test
India’s promising opener Yashasvi Jaiswal has become the youngest Indian to reach 1,000 runs in a calendar year in Tests during the second match against New Zealand in Pune on Day 2 (Friday, October 25). The left-handed batter achieved the landmark during his 30-run knock against the Kiwis in the first innings.
Notably, Jaiswal achieved the milestone when he smashed a four off Ajaz Patel in the 23rd over.
Only four other players have scored 1,000 runs before turning 23. They are Garfield Sobers (1,193 in 1958), Graeme Smith (1,198 in 2003), AB de Villiers (1,008 in 2005), and Alastair Cook (1,013 in 2006). Jaiswal has the chance to go to the top of the list with India set to play five more Tests this year.
Sachin Tendulkar holds the record for most runs in a calendar year for India in Tests. The legendary batter scored 1,562 runs in 14 Tests in 2010, including seven tons. Overall, Pakistan’s Mohammad Yusuf has the record for the highest runs in a calendar year in the format, amassing 1,788 in 11 games in 2006, hitting nine hundreds.
Jaiswal is the second-highest run-getter in the ongoing ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 cycle. The left-handed batter has amassed 1,295 runs in 13* Tests (23 innings), including two double centuries. The Mumbai batter is only behind former England captain Joe Root, who has amassed 1,717 runs in 19* Tests (33 innings).
"The guy has got real talent” – Rohit Sharma on Yashasvi Jaiswal
Rohit Sharma recently lauded Yashasvi Jaiswal ahead of the Test series against New Zealand. The 37-year-old credited Jaiswal's hard work behind the scenes for his rise at the international level. He said (via ESPNcricinfo):
"The guy has got real talent. He has got the game to play in all sorts of conditions. Obviously, very new to international cricket, so very hard to judge right now. But he has got all the ingredients for success at this level.”
“What he has shown us in this brief period of time, you can bet on him and expect him to do wonders for the team. He has come through the ranks. He has played a lot of domestic cricket, under 19 cricket. And obviously, has succeeded as well. That is why he is right now playing for India," he added.
In first-class career, Yashasvi Jaiswal has 3,179 runs in 51 innings, comprising 12 centuries.
