"Red-ball cricket is not my cookie" - Andre Russell

Veteran West Indian all-rounder Andre Russell has addressed his future in red-ball cricket. The seam-bowling all-rounder has declared that long-format cricket is not his thing as his body cannot keep up with it.

The 36-year-old is one of the hottest properties when it comes to T20s. However, he hasn't played a Test and has featured in only 17 first-class matches since debuting in 2007. The Jamaican also hasn't featured in one since 2014 and is unlikely to do so in the future.

Speaking to Britain's PA News Agency, Russell remarked:

"Red-ball cricket is not my cookie, I don’t think my body will keep up with Test cricket. But those in the team at the moment are fit enough and taking on the challenge."

Russell is currently involved in The Hundred 2024, plying his trade for the London Spirit. He has especially been highly successful in the IPL, contributing to Kolkata Knight Riders' multiple title wins.

Russell has also won the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the award in two seasons.

Andre Russell stated that the presence of numerous T20 leagues has made players give up on Tests. However, the hard-hitting all-rounder suggested that youngsters will still be ready to play on a stage as big as the World Test Championship (WTC):

"I don’t think it’s the money, I don’t think money is the issue. Based on the amount of T20 and leagues around the world, I think a lot of players are just not interested in playing Tests. As long as you can do well from contracts outside your nation I think they are going to grab that opportunity but everyone wants to play on the big stage.
"So, if the big stage comes in Test cricket, I know youngsters will be happy to play. I just don’t think it’s about money or anything like that."

The Jamaican will likely continue to represent the West Indies in T20s.
