Sacked at England, Matthew Mott appointed Sydney Sixers assistant coach ahead of BBL 2024-25
Matthew Mott has been named assistant coach of the Sydney Sixers on a three-year deal ahead of the 2024-25 Big Bash League (BBL) season. The Australian was recently let go as England men's white-ball head coach after the side failed to defend their T20 World Cup title in the West Indies and the USA this June.
Under Mott, England won the 2022 T20 World Cup on Australian soil, but lost momentum after that. His stint with Jos Buttler and Co. ended midway through his contract following a comprehensive review by England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) managing director, Rob Key.
The three-time BBL winners were on the lookout for a replacement following Cameron White's departure to the Melbourne Renegades as head coach. Mott will join the support staff that will assist Sydney Sixers head coach Greg Shipperd.
"We couldn't be more pleased to have 'Motty' committed for the next three years with the club. When the opportunity arises to bring a coach of Motty's calibre into your ranks, it's a no-brainer. We know what a fantastic resource he will be for our playing group," Sixers general manager Rachael Haynes said in a statement
"It goes without saying that his coaching resume speaks for itself. He has an incredible track-record of success around the world, and he's proven he knows what it takes to build, and sustain, a winning culture," she added
The Sixers made the finals twice across the last three BBL editions, but lost out to the Perth Scorchers and Brisbane Heat to remain stuck on three title wins.
"It's a place that evokes both great memories and a comforting sense of familiarity" - Matthew Mott on his return to Sydney
Matthew Mott's coaching journey began with the New South Wales team. He was in charge of the side from the 2007-08 season up until 2011. After a two-year stint with Glamorgan, he served seven years as the Australian women's team head coach, overseeing and developing a generational side.
"I'm delighted to join back up with the Sydney Sixers. Having started my coaching journey in Sydney many years ago, it's a place that evokes both great memories and a comforting sense of familiarity, which I'm looking forward to," Mott said in a statement
Sydney Sixers will begin their BBL 2024-25 campaign with a home encounter against the Melbourne Renegades on December 16.
