The Indian team, with the exception of skipper Rohit Sharma, is in Australia, preparing for the opening Test, which will be played at the Optus Stadium in Perth from November 22. India have come to Australia following a 3-0 whitewash against New Zealand at home.
As per a report in The Times of India, Sarfaraz was struck on the elbow while batting in the nets on Thursday. There's, however, no specific update of the extent of his injury. In a video shared by Fox Cricket on their X handle, Sarfaraz was seen walking off the field, holding his right elbow with his left hand.
The right-handed batter is one of the middle-contenders in the Indian team for the five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy. In case, Rohit is unavailable for the opening Test in Perth and Abhimanyu Easwaran is picked as an opener, KL Rahul and Sarfaraz might ending competing for one of the middle-order slots.
Sarfaraz Khan has made a decent start to his Test career
After knocking on the doors for a few seasons, Sarfaraz was finally handed his Test debut during the home series against England earlier this year. The 27-year-old made an excellent debut, posting scores of 62 and 68* in his first Test in Rajkot. He was looking good for a big score in the first innings when he was run-out following a mix-up with Ravindra Jadeja.
In the next Test in Ranchi, the Mumbai batter was out for 14 and 0. However, he made a strong comeback in Dharamsala in the last Test of the series against England, scoring a brisk 56 off 60.
The middle-order batter had a mixed series against New Zealand at home, though. After being dismissed for a duck in the first innings of the first Test in Bengaluru, he followed it up with a superb 150 in the second essay. Sarfaraz, though, struggled in the rest of the series, managing a highest score of 11 in four innings.
Looking at his overall Test stats after six matches, the Indian batter has scored 371 runs at an average of 37.10, with one hundred and three fifties.
