Shakib Al Hasan suspended from bowling in all international and domestic cricket
Veteran Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan is suspended from bowling in international and domestic cricket, as announced by Bangladesh Cricket Board on Sunday. The England & Wales Cricket Board had earlier suspended him from their competitions due to an illegal bowling action, and the BCB said that Shakib's suspension was the automatic next step.
After being called out for a suspicious bowling action in September during an English county cricket game, the veteran underwent an assessment of his action at the Loughborough University.
However, he failed it, which resulted in the ECB suspending it. According to clause 11.3 of the ICC regulations, when a player is suspended from bowling in domestic cricket, the ICC also recognizes and enforces it.
In a statement released by the BCB, as unveiled by ESPN Cricinfo, it said:
"The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has been informed that national team allrounder Shakib Al Hasan has been suspended from bowling in competitions under the jurisdiction of the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). As a result, Shakib is also suspended from bowling in domestic cricket competitions outside Bangladesh and in international cricket.
"Should the results of this (reassessment) analysis clear his action, Shakib will be permitted to bowl in international cricket and in domestic cricket competitions under the jurisdiction of all national cricket federations."
For now, the 37-year-old will continue to play purely as a batter in international cricket.
Shakib Al Hasan hasn't played for Bangladesh since the tour of India
The former Bangladesh captain's last international outing was during the two-Test tour of India in September. Amid the series, the left-hander had announced his T20I retirement and wished to play the subsequent home Test in Dhaka against South Africa as a farewell game from the format.
However, protesting students thwarted his wish due to his role as a Member of Parliament in the now-overthrown Awami League government. Shakib was also accused in a murder case. Although the spin-bowling all-rounder has expressed his wish to continue playing in ODIs, he wasn't picked for the series against Afghanistan and the West Indies.
Overall, he has played 71 Tests, 247 ODIs and 129 T20Is and is one of the finest all-rounders produced by the game. The star all-rounder could hang up his boots from international cricket following the Champions Trophy next year.
